Mr. Smith didn't need to go to Washington. He was already there, dwelling in the Swamp for decades.

Longtime Department of Justice prosecutor Jack Smith has been appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the DOJ's investigations into Donald Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election and whether Trump took classified documents from the White House.

“Appointing a special counsel at this time is the right thing to do. The extraordinary circumstances presented here demand it,” Garland said.

Trump called the move by the "egregiously corrupt Biden Administration and their weaponized Department of Justice" move “a disgrace” and vowed not to “partake” in Smith's investigation.

“I have been proven innocent for six years on everything — from fake impeachments to [former special counsel Robert] Mueller who found no collusion, ” Trump told Fox News.

Garland's move came three days after Trump announced he is running for president in 2024.

The DOJ has appointed "a super radical", Trump said of Smith. But the real problem, he charged in remarks on Nov. 18 at Mar-a-Lago, is Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, a "major Trump-hater" who is "totally controlled by Andrew Weissmann," a "bad guy but even a bigger Trump-hater".

Weissmann headed Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller's investigation of Trump which dominated headlines for much of the new president's first term in office. Weissmann's mixed reputation as a fierce prosecutor was earned in the Enron Case during which his efforts killed the legendary Arthur Anderson LLP auditing firm, destroyed 7,000 jobs and yet was overturned by the Supreme Court.

Although Weissmann is no longer in the DOJ, he went public in July with an Op-Ed for the New York Times that faulted Merrick Garland for not directly prosecuting Trump and his inner circle for the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

As head of the DOJ's Public Integrity Unit, Smith was heavily involved in the Lois Lerner IRS scandal a decade ago in which conservative Tea Party groups were improperly targeted for scrutiny, Just the News reported, citing government emails and congressional evidence.

New York Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney noted that it was hypocritical for the DOJ to pick up the pace of the Trump investigations while at the same time slow-walking the probe into alleged tax crimes by Hunter Biden.

“Appointing a special counsel to investigate President Trump will continue to politicize the Justice Department, moving its focus even further away from the real threat to the rule of law: President Joe Biden’s role in Hunter’s corrupt enterprises,” Tenney tweeted.

Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said Republicans should use their newly won control of the House to cut off funding for the investigation inthe next Congress.

"Republicans will need to refuse to appropriate any funding to Merrick Garland’s Special Counsel and defund any part of the DOJ acting on behalf of the Democrat party as a taxpayer-funded campaign arm for the Democrat’s 2024 presidential nominee," said Greene.

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz noted: Three "days ago, Trump announced and now [there is] a special counsel. This is Trump derangement syndrome but this time with a gun and badge."
