Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a "dictator" who played Joe Biden "like a fiddle" and talked him into sending $350 billion to Ukraine for a war "that could not be won," President Donald Trump said on Wednesday.
This message was not in synch with the formerly dominant political-media narrative but it was coming from perhaps the most powerful statesman in the world whose views on geopolitics are more authoritative with each passing day.
After canceling a trip to Saudi Arabia, where he was not invited to talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, White House national security advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Ambassador Steve Witkoff with Russian counterparts centered on negotiating an end to the three-year war, Zelenskyy said:
"Unfortunately, President Trump — I have great respect for him as a leader of a nation that we have great respect for, the American people who always support us — unfortunately lives in this disinformation space."
Vice President JD Vance told the Daily Mail: "The idea that Zelenskyy is going to change the president's mind by badmouthing him in public media, everyone who knows the President will tell you that is an atrocious way to deal with this administration."
Though the U.S. supplies most of the funding and weapons for Ukraine to fight the war, Zelenskyy has said he would not implement an agreement that his nation had not been part of creating.
Trump spoke with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last week and during that call the two agreed to visit each other's nations.

Waltz, who was at the table in Riyadh, said that Trump did not want "an endless war in Europe that has turned into a meat grinder of people on both sides." Waltz said that the "entire global conversation has shifted" since Trump took office and that now the parties involved are talking about how and when to end the war and not if the war will end.
Trump posted to Truth Social:
Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a War that he, without the U.S. and “TRUMP,” will never be able to settle. The United States has spent $200 Billion Dollars more than Europe, and Europe’s money is guaranteed, while the United States will get nothing back. Why didn’t Sleepy Joe Biden demand Equalization, in that this War is far more important to Europe than it is to us — We have a big, beautiful Ocean as separation.Despite his term being up in May 2024, Zelenskyy has said there would be no new elections until the war is over, per Ukrainian law that prevents elections from being held under martial law.
On top of this, Zelenskyy admits that half of the money we sent him is “MISSING.” He refuses to have Elections, is very low in Ukrainian Polls, and the only thing he was good at was playing Biden “like a fiddle.” A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left. In the meantime, we are successfully negotiating an end to the War with Russia, something all admit only “TRUMP,” and the Trump Administration, can do. Biden never tried, Europe has failed to bring Peace, and Zelenskyy probably wants to keep the “gravy train” going. I love Ukraine, but Zelenskyy has done a terrible job, his Country is shattered, and MILLIONS have unnecessarily died – And so it continues…..
Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to discuss an end to the war. The U.S. is interested in developing the rare mineral deposits beneath Ukraine while Russia wants the nation to hold new elections. If they are able to come to terms, it could lead to an agreement on a ceasefire and a peace deal, according to Fox News.
Rubio said, per the AP, that "the two side[s] agreed broadly to pursue three goals: to restore staffing at their respective embassies in Washington and Moscow, to create a high-level team to support Ukraine peace talks, and to explore closer relations and economic cooperation."
"Should this conflict come to an acceptable end, the incredible opportunities that exist to partner with the Russians geopolitically on issues of common interest and frankly, economically on issues that hopefully will be good for the world and also improve our relations in the long term," Rubio said.
Human Events senior editor Jack Posobiec, who was invited to the negotiations by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Kiev, noted: "EU leader summit in France produces no new joint statements, no agreement about sending troops to Ukraine, not invited to peace talks in Saudi Arabia."
French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency EU leaders summit in Paris on Monday where French officials said no firm announcements are expected to emerge beyond a show of unity from European leaders. More talks are expected at the broader EU level, they said.
“U.S. support will remain critical and a U.S. security guarantee is essential for a lasting peace, because only the U.S. can deter Putin from attacking again,” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote in Monday’s Daily Telegraph.
Starmer said that the UK was “ready and willing to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary. I do not say that lightly. I feel very deeply the responsibility that comes with potentially putting British servicemen and women in harm’s way.”
Lavrov described Trump as a “completely independent politician … who is used to talking directly.”
“Such people typically do not hide their opinions about pathetic individuals like Mr. Zelenskyy,” he said in remarks to lawmakers in the State Duma according to the state-run Tass news agency.
Trump “is the first, and I think the only Western leader so far, to say publicly and loudly that one of the root causes of the Ukrainian situation was the previous administration’s cocky policy of pulling Ukraine into NATO,” Lavrov said.
