Analysis by Onar Åm, LibertyNation.com

For months, up to two million peaceful democracy activists – one-quarter of the population – have protested the local government of Hong Kong for its increasing submission to mainland Communist China that infringes on the freedoms established under British rule. Although the protesters are rarely reported on in Western media and are soundly smeared by the Chinese government as terrorists and troublemakers, they are mostly nonviolent freedom fighters who have chosen the American flag as their symbol of liberty.

In the US, the progressive left views the very same flag as a symbol of hate. Universities all over America teach students that it is evil. For instance, after the election of President Donald Trump in 2016, Hampshire College removed the US flag on campus, calling it “a disruptive symbol.”

It might be tempting to believe that those who hate the American flag are just misinformed and didn’t get the memo about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Tempting but wrong. The protesters in Hong Kong wave the American flag for the same reason that the radical left wants to burn it to the ground: It represents liberty.

Once it became clear that the protesters championed American patriots, the radical left started siding with the police and the Chinese Communist Party. Progressive journalist Ben Norton, for instance, said in a tweet that “there are literal fascists in the Hong Kong guarimbas: they are the anti-China ones meeting with US diplomats, waving US/UK flags, singing the US anthem, torturing mainland journos, using Pepe symbols, & attracting US white supremacists like Patriot Prayer.“

He added that “the violent protests remain dominated by far-right anti-Chinese jingoists & pro-imperialist liberals. They lack a working-class base.”

Since the protesters are ethnically Chinese, the “anti-Chinese” and “anti-China” label makes sense only as a reference to the Communist system of governance in China. That is, Norton and his socialist acolytes support the authoritarian regime in Beijing over those who want to live in peace, the American way.

And in what way does it make sense to label the two-million-strong liberty movement in tiny Hong Kong as “white supremacist”? Norton appears to be equating capitalism and Western-style liberty with the white race and therefore incompatible with non-whites. It demonstrates how the progressive left is aligned weirdly with the so-called alt-right.

Hong Kong should be a warning for all liberty proponents in America. Only 8% of the population self-identifies as progressive, and they lack formal power. Were Americans ever at risk of falling into the hands of an authoritarian Communist regime, whom would they support? Hong Kong provides a likely answer: They would cheerfully fight anyone who values the American flag and everything it stands for.

This brings us to the progressives’ view of guns. Don’t be fooled when they oppose the Second Amendment on the grounds of preventing gun violence and deaths. They are against individual gun ownership for the same reason that American patriots support it: Guns are the people’s last stand against an authoritarian regime.
