Propaganda specialists surrounding President Xi Jinping are working overtime to burnish his reputation as a close-to-the-people savior who can best acquit himself of Chairman Mao’s “serve the people” credo.

Xinhua News Agency over the weekend released a long dispatch on “the basic reform orientations” of Xi Jinping.

The article summed up Xi’s achievement 1,000 days after the Chinese Communist Party General Secretary set up the Central Leading Group on Comprehensively Deepening Reforms (CLGCDR), a top-level body tasked with speeding up much-needed social and economic reforms.

During these 1,000 days, the CLGCDR convened 27 meetings and deliberated over 162 documents relating to politics, economics, culture and the judiciary.

“Issues that are of concern to the people have been comprehensively addressed,” the official Xinhua said.

The party mouthpiece unleashed a volley of figures that purported to show solid improvement in people’s livelihood.

For example, Xinhua said, government-sponsored health care has stretched to cover 1.3 billion Chinese, or more than 95 percent of the population.
